The son of a southern Flemish farmer, Évariste Carpentier entered the academy in Antwerp at the age of 18 and was taught by Keyser. In subsequent years as director of the academy in Liège he exerted a marked influence on his compatriots. He painted mythological scenes in a classical style, then from 1872 he was absorbed by historical subjects, notably episodes from the war of the Vendée: Chouans and Republicans; The Vendée in 1793; Under Terror; The Escapers and An Alarm.

He also painted realistic, strongly lit genre scenes, including Bad News from the Russian Campaign; At the Circus; Unappreciated Masterpiece and Day Off. He developed an art dominated by the use of a full palette and a bold touch.
